Building the Trail: Designing for Baturraden Trail Run 2024
Baturraden Trail Run is more than just a race — it’s a sport tourism experience in the heart of Banyumas. Designed for both passionate runners and outdoor travelers, the event offered virtual and offline race options, local food exhibitions, and a panoramic trail through mountain routes.
My role was to design a web platform that:
- Presents the race clearly
- Appeals to tourism-first runners
- Bridges offline participation and virtual GPS race models
Tip (Project snapshot)
Timeline: March – May 2024
Event: Baturraden Trail Run 2024
Deliverables: Full-screen responsive website
Tools: Figma, Webflow prep, Google Maps Integration
Design Goals: Sporty, bright, energetic, culturally local
The Challenge: Present a Festival, Not Just a Race
This wasn’t just about registering for a 7K or 21K — the site had to sell the idea of “lari sambil wisata”. From hiking maps to promo packages, the entire experience needed to be immersive yet informative.
Key Features & Experience Flow
Trail-Based Layout
Each section visually mimics elevation flow & map paths
Offline Route Maps
Interactive maps with route highlights (7K, 21K)
Virtual Race System
Integrated with YoYo GPS tracker and pricing tier display
UX Approach
The site follows a scroll-based journey with visually distinct sections:
- 🌄 Hero Section with neon trail graphics, kinetic typography, and logo-lockups
- 📍 Roadmap Timeline showing key event dates (Registration → Opening → Race)
- 🗺️ Map-Based Layouts for 7K & 21K trail paths via Google Map screenshots
- 🧢 Race Kits & Packages with visual cards for Journey / Conquer / Offline options
- 💬 Call-to-Action repeated every 2–3 scrolls to maintain conversion
Design Outcome
The final site reflects:
- Vibrant energy (fluorescent greens, purples, neons)
- Tourism flavor (local phrasing, culinary callouts)
- Youthful visuals (runners in motion, big type, festival feel)
Reflections & Community Response
Remark (Design Reflection)
By highlighting both sport and destination, the website turned Baturraden Trail Run from a local event into a digital sport tourism experience.
What Worked
- High contrast color palette captured attention fast
- Route visuals helped first-time runners understand the challenge
- Festival tone made it feel like a celebration, not a competition
What to Improve
- Add language toggle for bilingual runners
- Integrate real-time countdown for roadmap section
- Allow image gallery expansion for photo storytelling
Final Thoughts
Designing for Baturraden Trail Run was a chance to combine outdoor storytelling, sport UX, and local branding. Whether a user came to race, heal, or explore — the site served as their digital trailhead.
“Every kilometer tells a story — and the design should guide the first step.” — UX Designer
